Deskrivadur
So-called "Edlinger Mozart". The authenticity of this portrait has not been proven. The painting's history from its origin until 1934 is still a matter of ongoing research. It is uncertain, however, if this part of its history can ever be clarified. Despite of this problem, the painting has attracted much attention because of its high artistic quality and because of being a strong candidate for the last portrait of the composer.

The state of research on December 3, 2006, was as follows:

  • Schenk (1981) identified the painting as a work of Edlinger.
  • Michaelis and Seiller (2000) reported empirical evidence supporting the hypothesis that the portrait shows W.A. Mozart.
  • Bauer (2005) published some archival material to support his hypothesis that the portrait might show the Munich merchant and city councillor Joseph Anton Steiner.
  • Braun and Michaelis (2006) reported evidence challenging the hypothesis by Bauer (2005) [1].
