Deskrivadur
English: A postcard photograph (rotogravure) of two starving boys: one feeds the other. The boys are in an advanced stage of a famine related malnutrition. Their bellies are edematous due to ascites and liver failure resulting from severely inadequate protein intake. Their bodies have catabolized a large amount of skeletal muscle to compensate for the decreased protein intake, resulting in skeletal limbs. This is postcard number 3 of a set published by Rotogravure SA, Geneva, and sold by in 1922 to raise funds for the Ukrainian famine (number VIII of the set displayed bears the date 28 C'hwevrer 1922). The photographs were taken by Fridtjof Nansen and most likely published earlier as well in 1922 in his pamphlets and addresses for aid to the Russians.[1][2]
