here arrived at the rivera slave who had been sent by the king to learn the fateof his beloved daughter. And when the slave saw theprincess standing free and safe before him, with the bodyof the monster lying at her feet, a wicked plan cameinto his head, and he said, Unless you promise to tellyour father it was I who slew the serpent, I will kill youand bury you in this place, and no one will ever knowwhat befell. What could the poor girl do? This time there was noknight to come to her aid. So she promised to do as theslave wished, and he took up the seven heads and broughtthe princess to her father. Oh, how enchanted the king was to see her again, andthe whole town shared his joy ! And the slave was called upon to tell how he had slainthe monster, and when he had ended the king declaredthat he should have the princess to wife.
