Text Appearing Before Image: under the name of Castle or The Castles.It is well seen in Mr. H. W. Brutons South-West View of theCity (c. 1740-50). Moreover, in 1643 Corbet carefullydescribed it as a firm and lofty work. Without suspecting what it really might be, theindustrious Fosbroke1 launches into a rather vague disquisi-tion upon Celtic, Roman, and Saxon hillocks and watch-towers. But its position clearly tells us that it was of evenmore importance than these : it was nothing less than thesurviving south-western angle of the oblong Roman vallum(or ditch and mound defences) of Glevum, which had beensaved by its conversion to mediaeval uses; but it was neitherAlfreds work, nor was it King Williams. Fosbrokescorrespondent, Mr. Counsel, gave him fair proof of this, hadhe but fully realised the fact ! Mr. Counsel thus wrote tohim : It is now being removed.
